Road safety

Bracknell Forest’s roads are statistically some of the safest in the country.

Every year, our highways engineers oversee a range of improvements aimed at keeping all road users safe.

Improving routes to school

Over the last couple of years, we have built a number of crossings on routes to schools. These include:

  • King’s Academy Binfield - a new toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists on Forest Road and Temple Way
  • Owlsmoor Primary – a new zebra crossing on Cambridge Road
  • Edgbarrow  - a puffin crossing on Sandhurst Road and a pedestrian crossing phase at the traffic signals on Pinehill Road
  • Brakenhale - a new zebra crossing on Rectory Lane

We have improvements planned for routes to other schools. These are programmed to take place between 2025 and 2026 and include:

  • Kings Academy Easthampstead Park - a zebra crossing on Birch Hill Road
  • Ranelagh School - a puffin crossing on Broad Lane
  • Winkfield St Marys C of E Primary school and Lambrook School - improved speed management in Winkfield Row

Safer Routes to School schemes are being identified and prioritised for future improvements. These are funded by the annual capital work programme.

Cycling

Bikeability logo

Bikeability is the modern name for cycle training. It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle safely on roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling.

We offer free cycle training to all children in primary school. It's funded by Active Travel England through the Bikeability Trust and delivered by our training partner, Avanti Cycling. Contact your child's school for more information.

We can also offer cycle training to adults and families or bespoke sessions for children with special needs.

Young driver training

GoDrive is a free teaching resource. It helps young people in education become safer drivers and smarter passengers. Developed in partnership with police and fire and rescue services, it is available across 13 councils in the south-east.

This 1-hour teacher-led session is specially designed for young people 16 and over. It includes interactive discussions and peer-led tasks. It keeps participants engaged while covering essential road safety insights.

For more information, including how to register to deliver your own Go Drive session, please visit the GoDrive website.
